WASHINGTON – Indiana is as healthy as it can be as the No. 1 seed Hoosiers (29-6) play No. 4 seed Syracuse (28-9) in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament today in the Verizon Center.
Guards Jordan Hulls and Will Sheehey said they had no after effects from injuries they suffered in Indianas third-round win over Temple on Sunday in Dayton.
Hulls injured his right shoulder in the first half against the Owls, and he played the second half wearing a protective harness and a bandage on his right shoulder. The 6-foot starter didnt wear any protective padding during the Hoosiers open practice Thursday.
Im good. Im ready to go, Hulls said. The doctor has done a good job of getting me ready with ice and whatever they have to do to get me going.
Sheehey took a shot to his head near the end of the win over Temple and didnt play the last few minutes Sunday in Dayton.
Im fine now, said Sheehey, who did wear a bandage on his left forearm during the open practice. No practice time missed this week.
While Hoosier fans are reliving Keith Smarts game-winning shot against Syracuse in the 1987 championship game, Orange coach Jim Boeheim isnt enjoying that memory. But he was able to get over losing that game after a 16-year wait.
Indiana was a big, big favorite in that game, Boeheim said of the 74-73 loss. I thought we played as well as we could play, and we certainly had a lot of opportunities to win the game. When you lose a game like that, you really almost never get over it. I got over it in 2003 (when Syracuse won the national championship).
I never think about it anymore.
One Indiana fan is really happy the Hoosiers were put in the East Regional instead of the Midwest, where the Hoosiers would have played in Indianapolis.
That fan is Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh. The Super Bowl winning coach and IU coach Tom Creans brother in law said he was glad he could drive to a regional game.
Im just really excited for the family and everything, said Harbaugh, who was wearing an Indiana sweatshirt. Its been a crazy year. Its been a great ride. If Tom could pull off the miracle here and get to the Final Four and maybe win the thing, wouldnt that be something?
