More than 200 students from 37 colleges in the U.S. and Canada are in Fort Wayne this weekend for the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge and Dairy Challenge Academy.
On Thursday, students – both contest and academy participants – visited Kuehnert Dairy Farm on West Cook Road.
While the national competition runs today and Saturday at Grand Wayne Center, academy students will work with advisers who are experts in the dairy business. Five dairies in the area will be part of the on-farm experience for the students, who will learn how to help farmers evaluate and adapt their business to meet operational goals and profit expectations. In addition, the academy students will attend various sessions at Grand Wayne.
The students are training to be leaders in their field, such as farmers, researchers, educators, financial analysts, nutritionists, farm-service providers and veterinarians.
Industry experts will present research, new programs and career opportunities to students.
