FORT WAYNE – Fort Wayne police have made an arrest in Wednesday’s fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy on the city’s east side.
Late Friday, officers found Deadrian C. Boykins, 18, and took him into custody, police said Saturday in a news release.
Boykins, a city resident, was booked on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery in connection with the death of Elijah O. Freeman, police said.
Police officials released no other new information about the case Saturday. Chief Rusty York has said investigators are looking into whether the shooting was related to gangs or drugs.
Freeman, a South Side High School student, was shot dead Wednesday afternoon after a dispute in the 900 block of Hugh Street, near Hanna Homestead Park.
Witnesses told police at least two people chased Freeman down an alley and fired at him six to seven times.
After being shot, he ran a few feet before collapsing next to the foundation of a house, police said.
When officers arrived, Freeman had a weak pulse, and he died at the scene, police said. His death was the 15th homicide in Allen County this year, according to the county coroner’s office.
Boykins was being held without bail Saturday at the Allen County Lockup.
