Lawmakers come up short in blood drive

The legislative branch competed in a good old-fashioned blood drive last week, with bragging rights going to the men and women behind the scene.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, congratulated the Legislative Services Agency for having the most staff members donate in last Thursday's Red Cross Blood Drive at the Statehouse.

LSA is a nonpartisan office of the legislature that writes bills and calculates fiscal impacts.

Long asked members and staff from LSA, the House of Representatives and the Senate to participate in the annual drive in an effort to donate blood and help save lives. LSA won the friendly competition with 23 people donating, the Senate came in 2nd place with 19 people donating.

The House total was mysteriously missing from the news release, which means it couldn't have been good.

"I want to thank everyone who participated in last week's blood drive and say how proud I am that we exceeded the amount of donations anticipated by the Red Cross," Long said. "LSA staff members showed their dedication to helping save lives. I know my colleagues and I in the Senate certainly welcome the challenge to higher outcomes next year and continue this important and meaningful tradition."

Red Cross estimated that 55 pints of blood were donated, helping to save 165 lives.
