Southwest side to be Montessori school site

A new early-childhood Montessori school has secured a location and plans to open its doors in August.

Southwest Montessori Academy Inc. will be on the city’s southwest side, Director Vyju Kadambi said.

Kadambi has been in Montessori education for more than 15 years, including 13 years with the Fort Wayne Montessori school now named Peace Montessori School in New Haven.

She said that during her time with the school, she heard often of the need for a Montessori school on the southwest side of Fort Wayne.

“I am thrilled to be able to offer parents of young children a Montessori alternative in the Southwest area,” she said in a statement.

Kadambi plans to open the school in August for up to 40 students, ages 3 to 6.

The preschool and kindergarten program will charge tuition, and Kadambi said interested parents can inquire for more information on the cost.

Kadambi will also interview parents of students who apply to attend.

She said her long-term goal is to expand the school to elementary offerings.

The school will rent a 3,000-square-foot space at 1625 Magnavox Way, near Illinois Road and Interstate 69. The space requires renovations such as additional windows and a restroom for each classroom and updates to bring the space up to state and local codes.

Kadambi said the school will have three main goals: offer an authentic Montessori education that is melded with current research; garner support from parents as partners in their child’s education; and emphasize environmental sustainability, community involvement and volunteering.

Kadambi said she will require all the school’s teachers to be Montessori-certified by an accredited association.
