The highway department urges drivers to turn around if they encounter a flooded roadway.

According to the National Weather Service, most flash flooding deaths are vehicle-related. Six inches of standing water is enough to cause passenger cars to stall and a foot of water will float many vehicles.

Never drive around the barriers warning you that the road is flooded, the highway department said.

Huntington south side neighborhoods

Statement from the city of Huntington:

In the early morning hours of Friday the Little River that flows through Huntington flooded causing significant flooding in several neighborhoods in the south side of Huntington.

At this moment water is beginning to recede. Public safety crews are going door to door to assist affected residents with immediate needs.

Residents needing sandbags are advised to secure them from the show arena at Hiers Park off evergreen road.

Residents needing medical assistance or housing assistance should contact the combined dispatch at 356-7110.

The mayors office has reached out to the churches and service agencies of the community to help all those affected by the flooding.

The highway department said at 4:16 p.m. that the following roads were closed:

  • Sellers Lake @ Woodland Trail
  • 300 East between 600 South and 700 South
  • 550 South between Indiana 15 and Kinsey Road
  • 200 West between 700 South and 800 South
  • County Farm Road between 1200 South and Indiana 14
  • 400 East between 800 South and 900 South
  • 1200 South between Indiana 15 and Perue Road
  • 550 North between 73 East and 100 East
  • County Farm Road between Indiana 14 and 1000 South
  • 700 South between 875 West and 1000 West
  • 350 South between 600 East and 700 East
  • West Channel Road at Sellers Lake
  • 1200 South between 300 East and 400 East
  • 775 East between 500 South and 650 South
  • 350 South between 25 West and Indiana 15.
