Former DARE officer fired after DWI arrest

Mercer County, Ohio, Sheriff Jeff Grey announced Tuesday that courthouse deputy Mark Germann has been terminated after being charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Germann had worked for the sheriff’s department since 1988 and had been a DARE officer, the announcement said. He retired in March and returned as a probationary employee April 1.

He was later arrested by the Van Wert post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the sheriff said in a statement.

“There is no dispute that Germann was driving the car and that he did take a portable breath test at the scene that tested his breath alcohol above the legal limit,” Grey said in the statement.

He said he appreciates Germann’s past service, but he cannot condone driving under the influence.

No further information was immediately available.
