Sinkhole opens up in road in Indy, damaging 4 cars

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police say a sinkhole that opened up along a city street during the evening rush-hour caused damage to four vehicles that struck the big hole.

Police say the sinkhole that's about four feet wide and eight feet deep formed about 5 p.m. Tuesday on the city's northeast side. The Indianapolis Star reports that it's unclear what caused the hole to form, but the road where it appeared runs along a small creek.

Police say several cars tried to drive over the sinkhole before the back tire of a woman's vehicle finally fell in, flattening one of her tires. Three other vehicles also were damaged.

The city's Department of Public Works closed the road until repairs are made.
