Education key at event for King

Education will be the focus of a 50th anniversary commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech in Fort Wayne next month.

The event will be at the University of Saint Francis’ Performing Arts Center, the former Scottish Rite Auditorium where King spoke on June 5, 1963.

“The Future of Education – Connecting to Careers, Educating for Peace,” will be held June 5 at 4:30 p.m. Featured speaker is Glenda Ritz, Indiana superintendent of public instruction.

There will be two sessions, one from 4:30 to 6:45 p.m. with Ritz, followed by a panel discussion, and another from 7:15 to 9 p.m. that will offer a round-table discussion with educators and others on using education to decrease community violence. A complimentary boxed meal will be provided to registrants for the second session.

The free event is sponsored by the University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne Urban League and WANE-TV 15, Fort Wayne.

Registration is required for both sessions. Register at www.futureofeducation2013.eventbrite.com by Friday, May 29.
