A man killed while trying to outrun a train late Friday in downtown New Haven has been identified.
Derek R. Sowers, 22, of Woodburn died from blunt-force injuries, according to the Allen County Coroners Office.
His death was ruled an accident, the countys 12th traffic death this year, the coroners office said.
Sowers companions told New Haven police they were walking with him toward a railroad crossing in the 500 block of Broadway. When they heard a train whistle, they all ran toward the crossing, trying to beat the train, police said.
Except for Sowers, the group stopped running before reaching the crossing. He ran onto the tracks, and the train struck him. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at 11:10 p.m., and he was pronounced dead, police said.
