Catcher Dane Phillips went 3 for 4 with a double and home run to help lead the TinCaps past Dayton 5-3 on Saturday in Firth Third Field at Dayton, Ohio.
Center fielder Brian Adams hit his fourth home run of the season for Fort Wayne (20-13) as the club improved to 7-10 on the road. The victory broke a three-game losing streak away from Parkview Field.
It took Fort Wayne until May 20 to reach 20 wins last season. The club made it happen nine days earlier this season because of some solid pitching by starter Zach Eflin and his relief staff.
Eflin threw six innings and gave up four hits and two earned runs against the Dragons (12-22). He rebounded from a leadoff home run by Zach Vincej to begin his outing and went on to pick up his first win of the year.
The start moved Eflin to 1-3 and was his longest of the season. The TinCaps have had nine straight outings of five or more innings from their starting pitcher.
Bryan Rodriguez, who joined Fort Wayne Friday after extended spring training, went 161/37.innings and gave up three hits and one earned run. Leonel Campos came in for the final two-thirds of the eighth inning.
Campos stayed on in the ninth and picked up the save, his first of the season.
A day after striking out twice in 39 plate appearances at home against Great Lakes, the TinCaps got fanned nine times in 37 tries by the Dayton staff. Phillips was the only player with more than one hit. But timely hitting and a pair of shots from Phillips and Adams put the TinCaps on top.
Dayton starter Drew Cisco picked up the loss for the Dragons.
