An 8-month-old boy was killed and four other children were injured, one critically, when the vehicle they were in crashed into a tree in Noble County early Saturday, police said.
The driver was cited for not having a license and other violations.
Angelica Ibarra, 39, of Ligonier, told police she was driving a 2000 Pontiac Montana west on Noble County Road 900 North at the Noble-Elkhart county line about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when an animal ran into her path.
Ibarra drove straight through a curve, slid sideways and struck a tree on the rear passenger side of the vehicle, the report said.
Ibarra was not injured, but Gael Ibarra, 8 months, died from his injuries. Jose Ibarra, 9, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered head injuries. Erika Ibarra, 10, suffered facial injuries; Ivan Ibarra, 8, suffered stomach injuries; and Gerardo Ibarra, 14, had neck pain, the report said.
All four surviving children were taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
Late Saturday afternoon, Jose Ibarra was in critical condition, and the other three were in fair condition, hospital staff said.
Angelica Ibarra was cited for operator never licensed, speed too fast to avoid collision and child-seat violations, the sheriff’s department said.
