Sex-misconduct plea calls for 20-year term

A New Haven man accused of having a sexual relationship for several years with a girl, beginning when she was 13, is now facing 20 years in prison.

Robert C. Carney, 41, pleaded guilty in Allen Superior Court to two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor Monday.

His admission came as part of a plea agreement with Allen County prosecutors, which calls for him to be sentenced to 15 years behind bars on each count.

The plea agreement calls for 10 of those 30 years to be suspended, though, which Carney will serve on probation.

Prosecutors formally charged Carney with three counts of child molesting and four counts of sexual misconduct with a minor in March.

According to court documents, a now 18-year-old woman told her mother and then police that Carney began having sex with her five years prior.

As part of his plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend the initial child molesting charges and two of the sexual misconduct charges be dropped.

Carney is scheduled to be sentenced June 10.
