Police fire tear gas to end Steuben Co. standoff

FREMONT, Ind. (AP) — Police fired tear gas into a rural northeastern Indiana home to end a standoff that lasted more than three hours.

The Steuben County Sherriff's Department says officers went to the home near Fremont to arrest a man wanted for not appearing in court on drug-related charges in Wabash County. Officials say 44-year-old Kenneth Eltzroth of Wabash barricaded himself inside and refused to speak with officers.

A SWAT team was called to the house about 40 miles north of Fort Wayne and police stopped traffic on Indiana 827 during the standoff. Sheriff Tim Troyer tells The Herald Republican that officers decided to use the tear gas Tuesday evening when Eltzroth wouldn't come out.

Eltzroth then surrendered and was arrested. Police say no one else was inside the house.
