TinCaps win at Lake County

The TinCaps opened a four-game series at the Lake County Captains with a 4-3 win at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.

Stephen Carmon drove in the game-winners with a two-RBI double in the seventh.

Fort Wayne improved to 24-15, while Lake County fell to 13-25.

The TinCaps are 8-2 in their last 10 games and are in third place in the Midwest League’s Eastern Division.

The TinCaps got run-scoring groundouts from Brian Adams in the second, and Jeremy Baltz in the third as the score was tied at 2 heading into the seventh. Carmon’s double drove in Luis Tejada, who had doubled, and Corey Adamson, who walked.

Lake County outhit Fort Wayne 7-6 with leadoff hitter Mallex Smith going 2 for 4 with a run scored.

The TinCaps were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base.

Reliever Matthew Shepherd (3-0) went three innings and gave up a run to get the win, while Chris Nunn picked up his third save in as many tries. Starter Zach Eflin, struck out a career-best six batters in five innings. Eflin, 19, gave up five hits and two walks. Shepherd’s outing was big for a weary bullpen after four relievers worked in Thursday’s 7-6 loss toBowling Green.

Captains starter Luis DeJesus (0-4) took the loss.

The TinCaps, who improved their road record to 10-10, continue their four-game series at 6:30 tonight. The scheduled starters are Ruben Mejia for Fort Wayne and Ryan Merritt for Lake County.
