HUD to take furlough day May 24

First of 7 needed in fiscal year

The Department of Housing and Urban Development said today it would close its offices nationwide on May 24 as a result of government-wide automatic spending cuts known as sequestration.

The days are being paired with holidays and weekends to ease their effect, the department said in a statement.

Unless action is taken to overcome the reductions, the department said, it would need to close on six additional days during the rest of the fiscal year -- June 14, July 5, July 22, Aug. 2, Aug. 16 and Aug. 30.
