And Another Thing

Yo ho ho ...

And here I thought it happened because my wife took off her "lucky" Red Sox cap.

According to a recent interview with Pedro Martinez, it turns out the real talisman of the Red Sox's curse-busting run to their 2004 World Series title was, well, a sip of either Jack Daniel's or some sort of rum-and-root combination. Whatever the real narrative, the Red Sox apparently began passing around a Gatorade cup of something -- everbody took a symbolic sip -- before Game 4 of the ALCS. And we all know what happened after that.

The Red Sox beat the Yankees four straight to crawl out of a 3-0 hole, then went on to sweep the Cardinals in the Series.

Which, of course, makes the kerfuffle about the Red Sox drinking beer in the clubhouse during their 2011 death spiral supremely ironic, to say the least.

In any case, it trumps my story, which involves my wife, a diehard Red Sox fan, taking off her Sox cap before Game 4 because she thought it was giving off evil mojo. She never put it on again, and, sure enough, the Sox never lost again.

The rum thing, however, is way better than that. And so bottoms up, boys.

It's good for what ails you ... at least in moderation.
