Police: 2 1/2-year-old apparently drowns in pool

A 2 1/2-year-old boy apparently drowned in a Whitley County swimming pool on Tuesday, Indiana conservation officers said today.

Conservation officers said the Whitley County sheriff's department received a 911 call from a relative about 11:30 a.m. In a statement, they said the caller said the child had been found floating face down and unresponsive in a swimming pool at a home on Indiana 14 near Columbia City.

The relative had just noticed the boy was not in the house, and the back door leading to the pool area was open, the statement said.

It said the boy was pulled from the water and CPR was started. He was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.

An autopsy today preliminarily determined the boy's death resulted from drowning, the statement said, but the official cause of death "will not be released until all findings are available."

It said the matter is under investigation by conservation officers and the coroner's office. They were assisted at the scene by the county sheriff's department, county EMS and Jefferson Township firefighters.
