South Bend shuts down TinCaps in 1st leg

Fort Wayne (25-19) dropped the first game of a doubleheader Thursday with a 5-0 loss to South Bend (27-16) at Parkview Field.

The Silver Hawks move 2 1/2 games ahead of the third-place TinCaps in the Midwest League Eastern Division standings after seven innings of shutout pitching from Brad Allen.

TinCaps starter Justin Hancock gave up five runs, but only three were earned. An error in the top of the fifth resulted in two runs for the Silver Hawks and padded a 3-0 lead put together in the third.

The TinCaps had the bases loaded with no outs in the sixth inning, but were unable to score. A double play off a fly ball and baserunning error gave the TinCaps two outs, and Allen closed the inning on a ground ball to the shortstop.

The next game will begin in half an hour.
