IU opens Big Ten baseball tourney with win

Indiana opened the Big Ten baseball tournament by holding off Minnesota for a 4-2 victory Thursday at Target Field in Minneapolis.

The top-seeded and regular-season champion Hoosiers (41-13) will play No. 2 Ohio State (35-21) at 8:05 p.m. today. The Buckeyes advanced with a 3-2 win over No. 3 Nebraska.

IU took a 3-0 lead over Minnesota (30-21) in the first inning as Scott Donley hit a ground-rule double down the left field line for an RBI, Michael Basil drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Dustin DeMuth brought Donely home with a ground-rule double of his own to center field.

Minnesota got a run back in the top of the fifth with Troy Larson's RBI single, but the Hoosiers responded with a run of their own off Donley's single up the middle.

The Gophers scored the final run when Larson crossed home on Andy Henkemeyer's groundout in the eighth.

Aaron Slegers got the win for IU, giving up five hits and one run with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
