Awards/recognition

Keith Busse, co-founder and chairman of Steel Dynamics, was awarded the American Red Cross’s Humanitarian of the Year award for his contributions to the community. Also, Kayla Stezel of Bishop Dwenger High School was awarded the Northeast Indiana Youth Humanitarian of the Year award for her work with the Euell Wilson Center and Project Reads.

•The Huntington University Joe Mertz Center was renamed the Friesen Center for Volunteer Service in honor of Dr. Norris Friesen. He is the director of institutional effectiveness and a professor of German at the university.

Martin Mitchell, president and CEO of Starr Commonwealth and a native of Fremont, was awarded the Samuel Gerson Nordlinger Child Welfare Leadership Award by the Alliance for Children and Families.

Giving back

•A Zumbathon to benefit the Three Rivers Institute of Afrikan Art and Culture will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Renaissance Pointe YMCA, 2323 Bowser Ave. Cost is $5. For information, call 260-969-9442.

Verizon Wireless donated $7,500 to the Women’s Bureau’s annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, scheduled for Sept. 21.

The Volunteer Center is looking for people to help clean up playground and parks and at festivals. Opportunities are from 10 a.m. to noon June 1 at Lafayette Park, corner of Glencoe Avenue and Lafayette Street; 10 a.m. to noon June 8 at McCulloch Park, Broadway and Parkview Avenue; Germanfest, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 6, 8:45 p.m. to 1 a.m. June 7 and 1:45 to 5 p.m. June 8; and Greekfest, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. June 20 to 22 or 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. June 23, both at Headwaters Park.
