SUV backs over boy; driver faces charges

The driver of a sport utility vehicle accused of backing over a 5-year-old boy and then driving away was charged Friday with a felony.

Amazio Hollingsworth, 21, faces a count of failure to stop after an accident resulting in injury.

About 9 p.m. Sunday, a Chevrolet Equinox driven by Hollingsworth struck the boy on Francis Street, just south of Lewis Street, according to court papers. The boy suffered a large cut to the side of his forehead and was treated at Parkview Regional Medical Center, court papers said.

Hollingsworth told police he heard something as he was backing up and that after he finished reversing, he saw the boy on the ground, court papers stated.

Afraid the boy’s family may be around, Hollingsworth drove off, but about 5 1/2 hours later he turned himself in at the Allen County Jail, court papers said.

Hollingsworth, of the 400 block of East Taber Street, was set to be released Friday evening from the Allen County Lockup after posting a $2,500 bond.
