Fort Wayne and Lake County took advantage of opportunities at the plate early, and the TinCaps lead 5-3 heading into the fourth inning at Parkview Field.
TinCaps left fielder Wynton Bernard scored two runs on a triple in the bottom of the second inning and scored himself on a sacrifice fly from Brian Adams. In the third, second baseman Diego Goris drove in shortstop Maxx Tissenbaum on a single to left-center.
Then, a single by first baseman Luis Tejada set up Bernard's second hit, and second RBI, of the game. The speedy outfielder drove a pitch up the middle and padded the lead before being caught trying to extend a single off a throw home.
The Captains got two runs in the top of that frame with a double from left fielder Jorge Martinez, who drove in runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly by center fielder Logan Vick in the third brought in another run for Lake County.
TinCaps starter Zach Eflin gave up five hits and two earned runs in the first three frames. His counterpart, Ryan Merritt, gave up seven hits and three earned runs.
