Five pickup trucks have been stolen in Steuben County since June 1, three of which were taken Monday night.
The county sheriff’s department said the thieves are looking for vehicles that are unlocked and have keys either in the vehicle or hidden inside.
All of the stolen vehicles were recovered. The sheriff’s department said they were driven a short distance and then abandoned.
Thieves have also been going through other unlocked vehicles. Tools, money, GPS computer devices and towing accessories are among the items reported stolen.
Most of the thefts have happened in the areas of County Road 300 North and County Road 400 North, between Indiana 127 and County Road 600 East.
One pickup was taken from the Lake George area.
Residents in those areas are asked to pay special attention during the evening and at night. The sheriff’s department said members of the public should take special care to make sure that vehicles are locked and that the keys are removed.
