Dads whose wives died of cancer turn to NC group

By MARTHA WAGGONERAssociated Press

Organizers say a North Carolina group that offers support to fathers whose wives died of cancer may be the only one of its kind in the country.

University of North Carolina therapists say they started the group more than two years ago because they saw a need to help men struggling with their own grief and their children's grief.

Therapists' research found no support groups for the grieving dads. Statistics show cancer is the leading cause of death for U.S. women age 25 to 54.

Forty-seven-year-old Bruce Ham of Raleigh has raised three daughters since his wife died of colon cancer in 2010. He says he desperately needed help but didn't know where to turn. He says the group has helped him and his daughters return laughter to their home.
