Boy, 5, hospitalized after nearly drowning

A 5-year-old boy who nearly drowned at Bixler Lake in Noble County was clinging to life Sunday in a Fort Wayne hospital, according to Indiana conservation officers.

The boy and his family were at a beach in Bixler Lake Park in Kendallville when he went missing shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday. Almost immediately, he was found floating in about 5 feet of water, conservation officers said.

He was unresponsive, and lifeguards and medics performed CPR on him. He was taken to Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville and later flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

Conservation officers said he was in critical condition late Sunday afternoon. His name was not released.
