Man who fired gun, fled police charged

A Fort Wayne man arrested last week for firing a gun in the air and then fleeing police was formally charged Wednesday.

Curtis L. Haywood, 31, was arrested June 14 after police were called to the 4400 block of Warsaw Street.

Two men told police that Haywood had pulled up in a white Scion, climbed out of the car, fired a shot into the air and then walked toward the two men, pointing the weapon at them.

Police found Haywood trying to run away from the area. Officers chased him between two houses and eventually used a Taser stun gun to subdue him, court documents said.

At the time of his arrest, Haywood had red, watery eyes and his speech was mumbled and slurred. He appeared to have trouble staying balanced and smelled of alcohol, police said.

Haywood was charged Wednesday with two felony counts of pointing a firearm and one count of criminal recklessness. He also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement and public intoxication.

Haywood, of the 5010 block of Plaza Drive, was being held in lieu of $8,250 bail and without bond on an unrelated misdemeanor charge.
