Fried struggles, TinCaps trail 3-0 through 3rd

Fort Wayne starter Max Fried has struggled with his command, and his mistakes have proven costly for the TinCaps. South Bend leads 3-0 after three innings.

Fried gave up four extra-base hits in his first three innings, including three doubles and a home run by catcher Ronnie Freeman. The TinCaps' lefty has struck out four batters, but his curveball has been erratic and lacked movement at times.

South Bend starter Daniel Watts looked much the opposite.

Watts, the winningest pitcher in the Midwest League, surrendered one hit in his first three innings. Only two of Fort Wayne's batters have hit the ball out of the infield.

Center fielder Mallex Smith reached third base after being hit by a pitch, stealing second and advancing on a failed pickoff in the bottom of the third but that's as close as Fort Wayne has gotten to threatening.
