Guilty plea entered in dropbox break-ins

A 39-year-old New Haven man pleaded guilty in two separate cases Tuesday, admitting to breaking into Fort Wayne City Utilities dropboxes.

Jason O. Lane, of the 5400 block of Old Maumee Road, was charged in March with three counts of theft and two counts of criminal mischief.

In November, a surveillance system captured video of a man on a bicycle stopping at a dropbox on East Berry Street and prying open the box.

The man took envelopes inside the box, some of which contained cash payments, according to court documents.

The same man was seen on another video, this one from February, prying open the dropbox, but nothing was taken at that time.

Under the terms of the plea agreement reached with prosecutors, Lane admitted to one count of theft and one count of attempted theft.

The other charges will be dismissed at sentencing next months. He faces about 18 months in prison, on work release or in Community Corrections, as well as a period of probation.
