Hyde, Bayer win academic honors

– IPFW women’s basketball player Amanda Hyde was named the Summit League Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year by the conference Thursday, and Indiana’s Andy Bayer, a Leo graduate, was named the 2013 Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for men’s track and field and cross country.

Hyde is the first Mastodon to win the Summit League’s academic award, which is the most prestigious individual honor given by the league.

“I was basically in complete shock,” Hyde said of finding out about winning the honor. “I knew I had been put up for the award. As a junior, I wasn’t really expecting anything. I am just really honored and blessed.”

Hyde had a 4.0 grade-point average this year. She is majoring in math and math teaching and is also pursuing a minor in psychology.

“Academics are extremely important,” Hyde said. “I have my parents to thank for drilling that into my head when I was younger. I think the two (basketball and academics) are connected. It is my motivation in both to transfer over to the other one.”

Hyde had already earned numerous academic awards as she was named the Division I-AAA ADA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, a Capital One Academic All-American, a member of the women’s basketball Summit League Academic All-League Team, the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence and a Summit League Distinguished Scholar on the Academic Honor Roll.

The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 18.6 points and was named the Summit League Player of the Year last season. Hyde also averaged 4.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

“I keep getting these notifications that Amanda has won these awards, and I just send her a message saying, ‘Congrats,’ ” IPFW coach Chris Paul said. “I don’t know what to keep saying because it seems like a few weeks go by, and she is getting another one.”

South Dakota’s Jeff Mettler (cross country and track & field) was named the male Summit League Scholar-Athletes of the Year in a vote by the league’s faculty athletic representatives.

Bayer is a biology major who graduated this spring with a 3.60 GPA.

The 2012 NCAA outdoor 1,500-meter champion finished his career as an 11-time All-American including an eighth-place finish in the 1,500 at the 2013 national meet. He was a two-time NCAA runner-up and also earned indoor All-America honors in the distance medley relay and 3,000 meters.
