Arrest made in slaying at Fort Wayne American Legion post

Smith
Totton

FORT WAYNE – Fort Wayne police have arrested a man accused of fatally shooting another man last month in the parking lot of an American Legion Post.

Eric J. Smith, 36, was preliminarily charged Monday with murder in Allen Superior Court.

According to court papers, Smith shot Jabron Q. Totton early June 9 following an argument outside Post 148 at South Hanna and East Lewis streets. Medics took Totton, 37, in critical condition to a hospital where he later died, court papers said.

With help from witnesses, detectives identified Smith, known as Smitty, as a suspect, court papers said.

Smith, of the 6000 block of Oakmont Road, was being held without bond Monday at the Allen County Jail.

Totton was the 23rd homicide victim this year in Fort Wayne and Allen County.

Fort Wayne's first homicide of the year was reported at a gas station across the intersection from the post's parking lot.
