Scant leads in double shooting

Little new information was available Wednesday about a man who shot two people in broad daylight Tuesday afternoon on the city’s southeast side, police said.

Shortly before 5 p.m., officers arrived at the scene of a shooting at Smith Street and Senate Avenue.

James E. Starts III, 19, and Lashire M. Collins, 15, were found with gunshot wounds in the front yard of 4401 Smith St., near Abbett Elementary School, police said.

Both were taken to a hospital. Starts was listed in critical condition, and Collins was in stable condition. Updated information about their conditions was not available Wednesday.

The gunman, who was wearing gray clothing, was last seen running south in an alley west of Smith Street, police said.

Detectives were interviewing witnesses Tuesday evening, but the motive behind the shooting remained unclear, police said.

No arrests had been made, and police had no suspects.
