Victim shot multiple times, drives to hospital

FORT WAYNE – City police are investigating a shooting Friday morning on a quiet stretch of DeWald Street.

A woman called 911 about 11:15 a.m., reporting that she'd just seen someone on foot shooting someone in a pickup truck in the 800 block of DeWald, said Raquel Foster, a Fort Wayne police spokeswoman.

She said police did not know anyone had been hit until the victim, with multiple gunshot wounds, drove himself to a city hospital.

Foster said his initial condition was serious, but that police were waiting for an update.

Police believe the shooting was drug-related, Foster said, based on information earlier on in the investigation.

The victim is a 57-year old Fort Wayne man; he remained in serious, but stable condition, later Friday.

The suspect's vehicle was described as a newer model Chrysler 300, light, possibly silver.

The shooting was in front of a two-story yellow house near Miner Street, less than block from a tot lot. Neighbors sat on their porches after the shooting, watching police as children played on the sidewalks.

Several residents said they heard the shooting but assumed it was just fireworks.

Foster said the woman witnessed the shots being fired and called immediately, so police knew right away that this was a shooting and not just fireworks.
