Steuben charges 2 in slaying

Victim discovered wounded in front yard dies in hospital

Two Fremont men have been charged in the shooting death of a man found wounded early Sunday in the front yard of a Jimmerson Lake home, Steuben County Sheriff Tim Troyer said in a written statement.

The sheriff’s department received a report about 3 a.m. that a person had been shot at 220 Lane 355 Jimmerson Lake in the Buena Vista addition. Deputies responded and found Ruben Sanchez Jr., 29, of Muncie, with gunshot wounds in the front yard, Troyer said.

Medics took Sanchez to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital in Angola, and he was transferred to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, where he died from his injuries, Troyer said. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Mark Hines, 28, was charged with murder, and Tyler Biggs, 18, was charged with aiding in murder. Both men were being held without bond Sunday at the Steuben County Jail, awaiting their arraignments.

Detectives with the sheriff’s office and Indiana State Police obtained warrants to search two homes and two vehicles in the Jimmerson Lake area. They also interviewed several people thought to be involved in Sanchez’s death, and two of those people – Hines and Biggs – were arrested, the sheriff said.

Biggs’ Facebook page says he attended Fremont High School and worked as a busboy for the Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park.

In the sheriff’s written statement issued late Sunday afternoon, he referred questions to the Steuben County Prosecutor’s Office. Calls to that office rang unanswered, and a message left for the county prosecutor at home was not immediately returned.

No other details of the shooting were released, including the motive behind it.
