Son-in-law gets 19 years in beating death

ANDERSON, Ind. – A central Indiana man who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for an attack that led to the death of his father-in-law has been sentenced to more than 19 years in prison.

Thirty-seven-year-old Scott Atherton was sentenced Monday in the December attack that killed 66-year-old Douglas Gorbett and injured Atherton’s wife.

Madison County Deputy prosecutor Michael Chambers says Gorbett suffered a heart attack following what he called a “savage” beating by Atherton that left him with visible punch and kick wounds. Gorbett was hospitalized for nearly a month before he succumbed to injuries believed to be a direct result of Atherton’s attack.

The Herald Bulletin reports (http://bit.ly/13yTiWW) that Atherton pleaded guilty in May and as part of the agreement under which the original murder charge was reduced to felony voluntary manslaughter.
