Pitching foils TinCaps ... again

The TinCaps hadn't met the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers since the Midwest League Championship Series last year.

The Timber Rattlers won that series, and now they've won this one.

They defeated the TinCaps 6-3 on Thursday night in Appleton, Wis., after a back-and-forth 8-6 victory the night before.

The teams finish their three-game set today at Fox Cities Stadium.

The TinCaps' bats have been lively lately – they came into Thursday with an average of 13.6 hits and 7.8 runs over their previous five games, then put up another eight hits Thursday.

But the starting pitching isn't helping.

Not since Mat Fried won on June 29 at Lake County has a Fort Wayne starter gotten a win. Starters are 0-7 since then, including Fried's performance Thursday: A loss in 3 2/3 innings, after giving up nine hits and five runs, four of which were earned.

Fort Wayne's offense was led by Mallex Smith and Tyler Stubblefield, both of whom had two hits.

Wisconsin's Victor Roache was 3 for 4 with a triple.

Fort Wayne dropped to 6-14 in the second half, 49-40 overall. Wisconsin is 9-11, 38-47.
