The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/15LJmoJ ) the endangered western lowland gorilla was born at the zoo Wednesday.
Zoo president Tanya Peterson says it's a girl, and it appears healthy and active. It has yet to be named.
The 5-pound-1-ounce infant was born to mother Nneka, a 14-year-old gorilla, and father Oscar Jonesy, a 31-year-old, 330-pound silverback gorilla.
The newspaper says zookeepers will monitor the baby closely for the next few days to make sure Nneka takes to being a mother and that the rest of the zoo's six-gorilla troop supports her.
The gorilla preserve will be closed to the public for a few days.
Western lowland gorillas can weigh more than 400 pounds and often live 35 years.
