Comic-Con wrapped up Sunday in San Diego. Here are some highlights from the four day pop-culture convention.
Who will be Who?
The question of who the next Doctor Who will be is still a mystery.
Steven Moffat, who writes the landmark science-fiction story about a traveling time lord, says no one has yet been tapped to replace Matt Smith, who is exiting the role this year.
We havent done that yet, he said Sunday when asked at a panel on the show in the cavernous Hall H before a crowd bearing hundreds of sonic screwdrivers and who cheered wildly a trailer for the 50th anniversary show to be aired later this year.
The entire cast of X-Men thrilled fans by uniting on stage Saturday in the San Diego Convention Centers largest hall.
Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McEvoy, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Hugh Jackman and others made for an impressive panel.
Director Bryan Singer also gave fans a first look at X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is currently filming in Montreal.
One fan was brought to tears by seeing the cast assembled on stage.
This is like the best night of my life, she said before asking the panel which X-Men character was their favorite. Wolverine and Mystique emerged as the favorites.
‘Fire’ trailer debuts
The cast of The Hunger Games made its Comic-Con debut, along with the trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Lenny Kravitz were among the films stars who watched the trailer for the first time Saturday with more than 6,000 dedicated fans.
Lawrence and Hutcherson also talked about their kissing scenes in the film. She said they involved a lot of slobber.
Hutcherson said, It will be really hot if youre into snot.
Lawrence also discussed training for the stunts she performs in the film but noted, the hardest stunt is probably still just basic running.
She said she runs weird and added that she had a running coach for the film.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens in November.
‘Arrow’ adds villains
Theres two new residents moving to Starling City – and theyre no friends of Arrow.
The addition of a pair of villains based on characters from the DC Comics universe was announced Saturday at the presentation for the superhero CW series Arrow.
Spawn star Michael Jai White will play Ben Turner, a claw-wielding assassin known as Bronze Tiger. Hell form an alliance with China White, the alabaster-haired villainess played by Kelly Hu. True Blood actor Kevin Alejandro will portray Sebastian Blood, a savvy politician based on the New Teen Titans baddie Brother Blood.
‘Star Wars’ mystery
Samuel L. Jackson is just like everybody else: He has no idea whats going on with the new Star Wars films.
Jackson, played Jedi Master Mace Windu in the Star Wars prequels, was at Comic-Con on Saturday to promote his new film Captain America: The Winter Soldier and held court on a number of subjects in an interview, including J.J. Abrams new installments in George Lucas cinema-changing franchise.
Unlike the tens of thousands of fans at the annual gathering of fans, though, Jackson has had the opportunity to ask whats up. And he still doesnt know.
J.J. was there, I was there, Jackson said in an interview at the Hard Rock Hotel. I was like (raises eyebrows) and he was like (noncommittal shrug), and he just went about his business. I dont know what that means. Harrison (Ford) was there too, and he was like (shrug). I just think it would be cool to have some of us that people relate to as being part of the Star Wars franchise to give entré to the new characters that theyre going to bring to whatever the new thing is. It kind of makes it an easier entrance.
Celebrity 1st timers
Tom Cruise was almost as excited to be at Comic-Con as fans were to see him.
The megastar came to the pop-culture festival Saturday for the first time to showcase his latest film, Edge of Tomorrow.
Cruise told the crowd that hes always wanted to come to Comic-Con and was especially eager to see convention-goers colorful costumes.
Edge of Tomorrow is set for release next summer.
Sandra Bullock also made her first appearance at this years event.
The actress came to discuss the new film Gravity, in which she and George Clooney play astronauts floating through space.
Bullock spent more than six months physically preparing for the role, which required her to spend dozens of hours in a 9-by-9 foot cube that simulated zero gravity.
Gravity opens in October.
Exploding airplanes, flattened trains, massive missiles and even more massive monsters greeted fans Saturday morning.
Stars Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson joined director Gareth Edwards to offer a look at early footage from Godzilla, which hits theaters next spring.
The footage showed Godzilla battling another giant monster, nearly decimating an airport and sending cities into chaos.
The film is set for release in May, 2014.
The Dude is reuniting with Julianne Moore in his new film.
Jeff Bridges came on Saturday to offer fans an early look at Seventh Son, expected in theaters Jan. 17.
Bridges plays a witch hunter and Moore is a witch – and his former lover – in this mythological story of good versus evil. Bridges is shown battling flying dragons and massive beasts that emerge from underground.
The zombies are adapting on The Walking Dead.
The fourth season trailer showed off a breed of stronger, savvier undead – or walkers, as theyre called on the hit AMC zombie apocalypse series – encroaching on the survivors at their prison enclave.
Its going to get insane very quickly, new show runner Scott Gimple said.
The clip also teased a catastrophic event inside the prison with multiple deaths.
The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman said the villainous Governor played by David Morrissey will return in the fourth season but when, how and why will be a mystery that runs throughout the season.
The fourth season will debut Oct. 13.
Its wasnt hard for Game of Thrones to say goodbye to several characters.
The panel for the fantasy HBO series kicked off Friday with an in memoriam segment set to Boyz II Mens Its So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.
The tribute was dedicated to the scads of characters whove bit the dust on the show, from Khal Drogo to Catelyn Stark, who died in the infamous Red Wedding installment.
Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, star Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast previewed footage Friday from the upcoming fan-funded film.
The footage that was teased didnt give away too much of the plot as it showed an adult Mars as a hot-shot New York lawyer being interviewed with a character played by Jamie Lee Curtis.
In the film, Mars returns to her hometown of Neptune, Calif., to meet up with her old pals for their high school reunion and solve another mystery.
No 3rd film soon
The truth is out there: Dont expect a third X-Files film.
While series creator Chris Carter was suitably impressed by a boisterous and enthusiastic crowd clamoring for a third big-screen venture, he remained decidedly noncommittal on the idea.
We can get to it later, Carter said Thursday, when asked of the possibility at a panel celebrating the Fox series 20th anniversary. The panel also featured stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, along with writers and producers.
While Carter was cool to the proposition of a third X-Files film, Duchovny and Anderson were decidedly more amenable.
I always thought whenever we can come back together, we would, as much as we can, so we will, Duchovny said.
Asked if the show should return to television, a la 24, Anderson replied No! then added, but a film would be great.
The Little Mermaid is going to be part of the Once Upon a Time world.
The revelation that Ariel is swimming around Storybrooke was teased in a video at the conclusion of the ABC fairytale dramas Saturday morning presentation. The clip featured glimpses of a red head snatching a fork away from Grumpy, ditching a blue dress, diving into the ocean and flapping a mermaid tail.
Colin ODonoghues Captain Hook was introduced in a similar fashion at last years pop-culture convention.
The third season will feature several of their characters traveling to Neverland.
Its been a lot of fun, Parrilla said of shooting scenes on the shows rendition of the Jolly Roger. Its been rocky, but its been fun.
