Detainee freed after pool abduction scare

Fort Wayne police officers rushed to the Sycamore Hills pool where reports of a child being abducted led to a man being detained on shoplifting allegations. But the man was later released without being charged.

About 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, police received a call about a shoplifter fleeing from Connolly’s Do-it-Best hardware, 10301 Illinois Road, police spokeswoman Raquel Foster said.

Foster said store employees provided a description of a man who had stolen items and then fled with a young child in his arms after being confronted by store workers.

Eight minutes later, a security guard working at Sycamore Hills Golf Club, 11836 Covington Road, reported seeing a man running near the pool with a young girl in his arms, Foster said.

The guard, thinking the child was being abducted, called 911.

Several officers working at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at the golf club then rushed to the area and took the man in custody in the alleged shoplifting and discovered the child was his, Foster said.

The man was later released without any charges, Foster said.
