Stolen car runs into Columbia City BMV

Police chase ends in minor injuries

The Columbia City license branch will be closed until further notice after a car crashed into the building late Monday, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles said Tuesday.

A man described as suicidal ended up in a chase with police Monday night, suffering minor injuries when the car he was driving hit the building at 662 Countryside Drive.

Columbia City police were called about 10:30 p.m. about a stolen vehicle in the area of Countryside Drive. When officers arrived, they were told the man was suicidal and might have a handgun.

Officers learned the man was likely in the area of Whitley County Road 400 North just east of Indiana 9. He drove out of a driveway in a white Pontiac Grand Prix when city and county officers arrived, police said.

Going south on Indiana 9, the man turned onto Liberty Drive and the car hit the building at what police described as a high rate of speed. The driver, Danny Rose, was treated for minor injuries, authorities said.

Rose, 20, of Columbia City, was arrested on a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief and felony counts of auto theft, resisting law enforcement and reckless driving. He was being held Tuesday evening in lieu of $27,500.

BMV customers can visit Fort Wayne’s branch at 6721 Old Trail Road, Suite 300, in the Waynedale neighborhood; the Warsaw branch at 2888 Frontage Road; or the Huntington branch at 2982 W. Park Drive. The Albion License Branch, at 113 W. Jefferson St., is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
