NEW YORK – Anthony Weiner found himself caught in another sexting scandal Tuesday like the one that destroyed his congressional career, but stood side-by-side with his wife to say he won’t drop out of the race for mayor of New York.
“This is entirely behind me,” Weiner said at an evening news conference, hours after the gossip website The Dirty posted X-rated text messages and a crotch shot that it said the former congressman exchanged with a woman after he left office.
Weiner admitted sending a woman sexually explicit photos and messages and acknowledged the activity took place as recently as last summer, more than a year after he resigned from the House in disgrace for the same sort of behavior with at least a half-dozen women.
Officer who leaked photos punished
A Massachusetts State Police photographer who released photos of the bloodied Boston marathon bombing suspect during his capture has been placed on restricted duty.
Sgt. Sean Murphy leaked the photos to Boston Magazine last week, saying he wanted to counter a glamorized image of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
On Tuesday, Murphy was placed on desk duty, where he would have no contact with the public, until a further investigation is completed.
Murphy wasn’t authorized to release the 14 photos.
Mechanic finds baby’s body in car
Authorities say a mechanic working on a car found a baby’s body inside a box in the vehicle’s trunk at a repair shop in northern Ohio.
Police in Shelby say the mechanic discovered the body Tuesday after noticing a strange odor.
Investigators say the mechanic realized the odor was coming from the trunk, opened it and found the box. When the mechanic went to put the box to the curb for disposal, he opened it and found the body.
Police say the car’s driver is a 17-year-old girl. She is being interviewed.
Shelby Police Chief Charlie Roub tells the Mansfield News Journal it’s not clear how long the body had been inside the car.
Girl recuperating after coyote bite
A 2-year-old girl is recovering after she was bitten and dragged by a coyote at a Southern California cemetery.
The Orange County Register reports Klarissa Barrera, of Long Beach, was given a rabies shot and treated for a 2 1/2-inch gash on her calf.
She was attacked 10 feet from her mother Thursday as the family visited a relative’s grave at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress.
Michelle Luper says the coyote bit her daughter on the back and dragged her toward some bushes. Luper says she screamed and lunged, and the coyote let go.
Stomach bug may be foodborne
More than 250 people in at least six states have come down with a stomach bug that could be linked to foodborne illness.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the cyclospora infection causing diarrhea and other flu-like symptoms has been reported in Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia and Connecticut. The CDC said 10 people have been hospitalized, and most of the reported illnesses occurred from mid-June to early July.
The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the infections, which are most often found in tropical or subtropical countries and have been linked to imported fresh produce in the past.
The illness is usually spread when people ingest foods or water contaminated with feces. The agency said it isn’t yet clear whether the cases from all of the states are linked.
