EACS rolls out parental notification system

Fort Wayne – East Allen County Schools launched a new parent notification system to better reach the families of its more than 9,000 students.

The district’s previous system was old and inefficient, said Tamyra Kelly, district spokeswoman. A mass information message sent to homes of East Allen families at 9 a.m. wouldn’t reach some until later in the evening, she said.

The new system, called School Messenger, will notify parents in the entire district in 30 minutes or less and can send messages by text, phone or email.

It also has a translation component for families in the district who do not speak English.

“This system will provide principals and central office administrators the ability to communicate important information to parents immediately and efficiently,” EACS Superintendent Ken Folks said in a statement.

Kelly said the district hopes the system will cut back on misinformation that is sometimes spread to parents during the school day.

The upgrade to School Messenger cost the district about $15,000. Kelly said Folks tested the system Thursday to send out a reminder to families about East Allen’s upcoming registration days.

At registration, parents will be asked to provide updated contact information, so they can receive notifications through the system.
