1 charged in High Street slaying

A Fort Wayne man has been arrested and charged in the death last week of a man found dead in a near-northwest side backyard.

Steven L. Lemler, 28, was picked up Friday morning and charged with involuntary manslaughter, according to a statement issued by Raquel Foster, a Fort Wayne Police Department spokeswoman.

Police said the “investigation progressed quickly due to the immediate and overwhelming cooperation of the neighborhood, and due to eyewitness information.”

The body of Kirk Lecount, 42, was found in the backyard of 1707 High St. about 12:30 p.m. July 18.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office ruled he died of blunt-force trauma to the head.

Lecount’s killing was one of three discovered July 18 in Fort Wayne. Terry Lee Lagrone, 40, and Desiree Sheets, 19, were found shot to death in a home near McMillen Park that had been set on fire.

The city and county have had 26 homicides so far this year. Last year, there was a total of 30 homicides.
