Leo grad sets IU record in mile run

Leo graduate Andy Bayer, an Indiana distance runner, set a program record in the mile during a race Saturday in London.

Bayer ran a 3:52.90 during the Sainsbury's Anniversary Games, his sixth personal best in the past month. It was good for a ninth-place finish. Bayer finished fourth among Americans in the event.

Bayer's time was also the fastest time in a mile by an Indiana native.

Bayer, who finished his career as a Hoosier this spring, became the first IU runner to run a sub-4 mile outdoors since 1991, when former Olympian Bob Kennedy accomplished the feat.

The former Lion was one of three runners in the top-10 under the age of 25. Augustine Kiprono Choge of Kenya won the event with a 3:50.01 finish.
