Hoosier couple traveling to Sweden for candy contest

JEFFERSONVILLE – The owners of a popular southern Indiana candy business are preparing to travel to Sweden to compete in an international competition.

Warren and Jill Schimpff of Jeffersonville will be the only will be the only Americans in the contest.

The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., reports participants will be asked to prepare red-striped peppermint sticks known as "polkagrisar," or polka-dancing pigs. The challenge is to make 32 of the 1.8-ounce sticks from 3.8 pounds of sugar.

The Schimpffs say they don't expect to win but are looking forward to meeting other candy makers from around Europe. They also plan to visit friends they haven't seen since they lived in Sweden in the 1970s.
