Slaying suspect returned to Indiana

A man recently extradited from India to Indiana on a 1989 murder charge is expected to make his first court appearance Thursday in a Steuben County court.

Mahfuz Huq, 47, arrived in Indianapolis on Saturday and was booked into the Marion County Jail. On Tuesday, he was transferred to the Steuben County Jail, according to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.

Before FBI officials brought Huq to Indiana, he had been in New Delhi in custody at Tihar prison pending his extradition to the U.S., the sheriff’s department said.

Huq is accused in the stabbing death of 19-year-old Todd Kelley. Kelley’s girlfriend, who had previously dated Huq, found the body in Kelley’s home in Hamilton, U.S. authorities said. Huq, then 22, left the country after Kelley’s death.

Huq, a naturalized U.S. citizen whose family is from Bangladesh, was arrested in New Delhi in February 2011, and he fought his extradition to the U.S.
