Brothers on the line

SOUTH BEND – Notre Dame left tackle Zack Martin would like to play on the line with younger brother Nick.

But the senior lineman also knows that just because Nick Martin got plenty of work at center during spring drills, there is no guarantee the brothers will be starting together when the season kicks off Aug. 31 at home against Temple.

"Obviously, there is going to be some competition," Zack Martin said Sunday. "Guys don't win jobs in the spring. They have to win it in the fall. I'm very confident that he is prepared to play. All of those guys Conor (Hanratty), Matt (Hegarty), all of those guys are going to put themselves in position … even if one of them is not a starter, they are going to be in a position to be prepared to play."

Nose guard Louis Nix III said he saw good things from Nick Martin during the spring as the senior defensive lineman went up against a new center after Braxston Cave graduated.

"I think Nick has done pretty well," Nix said. "He is one of those guys who doesn't too much care that I'm bigger than him, my first step is kind of nice. He adjusts to it, and he works hard."

Nix also saw the brothers as being very similar.

"You know his brother, Zack, he's a hard worker. Zack is a hard worker, and I guess it is in the family," Nix said. "They both work hard. They both give it their all.

"(Nick Martin) doesn't give up. He fights, fights, and that's why I like him a lot."
