Officer suspended 30 days in excessive-force case

A Fort Wayne police officer was suspended last month after striking a man with a mental illness over the head multiple times.

Officer James A. Arnold, who has served on the department since October 2007, was suspended for 30 days, Police Chief Rusty York said Monday during the Board of Public Safety meeting.

Arnold’s suspension stems from a Jan/ 31 incident in which he responded to a call for assistance from another police officer.

While attempting to restrain the man, Arnold struck him multiple times on the head, resulting in a fracture in his jaw area, York said.

This was the first time Arnold has been disciplined for the use of excessive force, according to his personnel file.
