8 people escape apartment fire

A northeast-side fire forced eight people from their apartments and left moderate damage to the two-story building late Saturday, according to a Fort Wayne Fire Department report.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at 1905 Hillside Ave., Apt. 3, shortly before 11:30 p.m. and had the fire under control in 20 minutes.

The first engine arrived in four minutes, and crews found smoke coming from the upstairs apartment. A fire in a bathroom was quickly extinguished.

Other units on the scene searched the other apartments and found all had been evacuated. Eight adults were out of the building before firefighters arrived.

One person from the apartments was injured and transported to a hospital in good condition, the report said

The fire remains under investigation.
