DNR offers deer-hunting program

– The Department of Natural Resources is hosting a program that begins in Fort Wayne on Sept. 5 that will teach participants how to hunt whitetailed deer.

Registration is open for Hunt, Fish, Eat, a four-session series with an optional fifth session.

Sessions are once a week and are for new hunters, 18 and older.

Curriculum will focus on laws and regulations, firearms and safety, locating a hunting spot, tracking and field dressing, and handling and preparing venison for the table.

Participants will be able to sample venison recipes and examine a variety of hunting gear and resources. Information and to register: htm.

Salamonie to hold butterfly class

Preschool children and their parents/guardians are invited to Salamonie Preschool Beautiful Butterflies on Wednesday.

The class will be 10-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-2 p.m. at Salamonie Interpretive Center at the Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area in Andrews. The fee per child is $2. Register by calling the Upper Wabash Interpretive Services at 260-468-2127.

Riders Rendezvous at Lost Bridge

The eighth annual Salamonie Riders Rendezvous will be Sept. 20-22 at Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area, Horseman’s Campground, Loop A.

Festivities begin Friday evening with Dutch oven cobbler and cowboy coffee, and continue Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with a leather working class;, a meet-and-greet with “Know You, Know Your Horse” authors Marry Morrow and Eunice Rush; a plant-and-trees scavenger hunt on horseback; a cowboy dinner at 5:30 p.m.; and a plant seminar at 7. Cowboy Church will be Sunday from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. The Tack Flea Market, sponsored by Friends of Upper Wabash Interpretive Services, will be at 10 a.m.
